How to Restart a Flat Battery | Vision Vauxhall

How to Restart a Flat Battery

A flat battery can be a massively unexpected inconvenience. With the help of another motorist you can restart the battery and get back on the move as soon as possible!

What you will need

To restart a flat battery you will need a set of jump leads and another friendly motorist (the donor car).

How to restart a flat battery

You should only attempt to restart a flat battery yourself if it is safe to do so. Otherwise, leave it to the professionals by calling your breakdown provider. Make sure both vehicles have the same voltage, the handbrakes are on, and the ignition is off. Then, here are the steps you need to take:

  1. Open the bonnet and check your battery. If it is damaged or leaking, stop and call your breakdown provider.
  2. If there are no signs of damage, remove all jewellery and watches that could brush against the battery, causing a dangerous spark.
  3. Take the red jump lead and connect it to the positive terminal of the donor vehicle’s battery
  4. Take the other end of the red jump lead and connect it to the positive terminal on your flat battery
  5. Attach the black jump lead to the negative terminal of the donor car’s good battery
  6. Attach the other end of the black jump lead to a suitable earthing point on your vehicle’s engine or chassis, away from the battery and fuel systems.
  7. Wait for three minutes to allow the voltages to equalise
  8. Start the engine of the donor car and let it run for one minute
  9. Start your vehicle and leave both running for ten minutes
  10. Turn off the engine of both cars and remove the jump leads in reverse order, starting with your vehicle

Once complete you can start your vehicle to see if the recharge has worked. If not, it may be a more serious fault that should be looked at by one of our Vauxhall service specialists - you can make an enquiry here.
