Weekly motoring publication Auto Express has named the new Vauxhall Astra hatchback its Compact Family Car of the Year at its 2016 New Car Awards.
Fending off competition from the MINI Clubman and SEAT Leon, the magazine described Vauxhall’s latest family car offering as “[coming] back with all guns blazing to fight off the competition”. While rivals excelled in one area – be it style, quality, or handling fun – the Astra won out by putting up a compelling case across the board. Auto Express commended its blend of a spacious and practical cabin and boot, entertaining drive and attractive design, with sharp angles and attractive proportions.
Its choice from the extensive range of engine and trim level combinations is the 1.6 CDTI SRi Nav. It chose this version for its competitive list price compared to rivals, its fast and punchy diesel engine, and generous list of standard equipment, including OnStar.
OnStar is a revolutionary in-car concierge that turns your Astra into a Wi-Fi hotspot. It also links with your smartphone so you can remotely check things like oil levels and tyre pressures, and even notify the emergency services in the event of an accident. Not only can it make your life easier, but it might just save it too.
They were also at pains to point out the step up in interior quality compared to previous versions, while offering more equipment at cheaper prices.
Rory Harvey, Chairman and Managing Director of Vauxhall, said: ““The Astra has excelled once again. It’s great to see how well-received the Astra has been so far and we are pleased that the Astra is being recognised for the hard work that has gone into making this model the best yet.”
